Survey on Agricultural Cooperatives in Gegharkunik, Armavir, and Shirak Marzes

Avenue Consulting Group conducted a comprehensive survey on agricultural cooperatives within the communities of Gegharkunik, Armavir, and Shirak marzes as part of an initiative to strengthen local agricultural economies. The project aimed to assess the current status of agricultural cooperatives in these regions and identify opportunities for growth within specific value chains. To gather reliable data, the team conducted interviews with cooperative members, analyzed existing market conditions, and reviewed the organizational structures of these cooperatives. The research focused on understanding the strengths, challenges, and potential for development in the targeted agricultural communities.

Based on the findings, the study identified several promising business opportunities, particularly within the milk and high-value berry and vegetable value chains. These opportunities were tailored to the specific resources and conditions of each marz, such as the climate suitability in Gegharkunik for berry production and the strong dairy production tradition in Armavir. For Shirak, the potential for expanding both vegetable and milk production was highlighted, given the region’s agricultural capacity and market access. These findings provided a foundation for local cooperatives to diversify their production, improve quality standards, and access new markets, ensuring more stable and profitable operations.

Additionally, Avenue Consulting Group outlined the value chains with the highest potential economic outcomes, focusing on areas where investment could yield significant returns for cooperatives and their communities. The analysis emphasized the importance of creating stronger linkages between producers, processors, and markets, facilitating better coordination and efficiency throughout the value chain. Recommendations included investment in processing facilities for dairy products, training programs for berry cultivation, and support for improved agricultural practices. This targeted approach aimed to enhance the competitiveness of cooperatives, strengthen local economies, and contribute to sustainable development in Gegharkunik, Armavir, and Shirak marzes.
