Development of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Framework and Pilot Interventions in the Republic of Armenia

Since November 2025, Avenue Consulting Group, in joint venture with Geovibe CJSC, has been implementing the Development of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Framework and Pilot Interventions in the Republic of Armenia under a project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented through UNDP. The assignment supports the Government of Armenia in advancing its commitments under the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and in integrating LDN principles into national environmental and development policies.

The project focuses on establishing an evidence-based national framework for achieving land degradation neutrality, combining analytical assessments with policy and planning support. Core activities include baseline analysis of land degradation trends and drivers, refinement of LDN targets and indicators, and alignment of LDN objectives with national strategies related to environment, climate change, agriculture, and rural development.

Key components of the assignment include:

- assessment of land degradation status and priority landscapes using analytical and spatial approaches;

- integration of LDN targets into policy, strategic planning, and land-use frameworks;

- design and technical justification of pilot land restoration and sustainable land management interventions;

- structured stakeholder engagement with national and local institutions, communities, and development partners.

By applying international best practices and tailoring them to Armenia’s institutional and territorial context, the project contributes to strengthening climate resilience, restoring degraded lands, and promoting sustainable land management. The resulting LDN framework and pilot interventions are expected to support long-term environmental sustainability, improve ecosystem services, and enhance rural livelihoods across targeted regions of the country.
