Armenia requires a more proactive stance from the government in economic matters, according to Karen Martirosyan, co-founder of the "Export Armenia" community and shareholder at Avenue Consulting Group.
“You can be reactive, meaning the government responds to problems as they arise, or proactive, where you take control and move forward. In our case, it seems that the government is more reactive,” Martirosyan said in the "ARKA-Business" show on ARKA's YouTube channel.
He emphasized that for the government to take a truly proactive position, it should involve the business community in strategic planning, particularly for a 10-year outlook, and determine the resources needed to implement these strategies. Only then can the government play a leading role in economic development.
Martirosyan highlighted that while the government claims to improve economic efficiency by promoting technology rather than exports, he disagrees with this approach. Given Armenia’s landlocked status and limited logistics access, Martirosyan believes that greater involvement and proactive efforts from the state are essential.
“I don’t think the private sector alone can solve logistics challenges,” he added.
Martirosyan concluded by stressing the need for effective collaboration between the private sector and the government, rating the current cooperation at just four out of ten.
